While I do agree that it is a good thing to adopt a stray dog; I also think that it is perfectly fine if someone chooses to buy the kind of dog that they want.
The responsibility for so many dogs being in shelters lies not with the prospective dog owners; but with the people who allow their dogs to breed irresponsibly, or who just leave and abandon their dogs.
But to say that a person should only get a dog from the dog pound or rescue shelter, is just exactly like saying that because there are so many needy children in the world, people should adopt an orphan rather than have their own child.
Often , the problem is actually caused by the same thing.
Some people have more children than they can care for, or they are simply not fit to become parents at all, leaving the children to be raised in orphanages, or foster homes.
In any case, this does not mean that responsible people should not become parents of their own children, and no one would likely say they should.
However, the same reasoning does not prevail with pets, and people are often made to feel guilty if they choose to purchase a puppy rather than adopt a stray that was dumped by someone else.
