Butterflies are shortlived pets due to their fragile nature and short lifecycles. Rearing butterflies poses some challenges since the owner doesn't get to personally know the insects. This form of detachment is compensated by the fact that their prescence is quite soothing and calming to frayed nerves. Then there is the occasional issue of fungal infections which result in an overkill. Where, I come from, butterflies are reared for silk production and this particular species feeds on the mulberry tree and its very easy to rear. I suppose that to rear butterflies as pets, you should do so for their aesthetic appearance, I mean, the rainbow of colours and a docile nature.
