In certain other countries there is a rail system that provides a fast, reliable mode of rail transportation. Most of the time its referred to as a bullet train or high speed rail, whichever the term it does offer another choice to get to a location in a reasonable time period.

The one thing to should be taken in account is that the countries that have this system in place are much smaller than the US. Would a high speed rail that was connected to an efficient transit system here work? Perhaps taking certain sections of our aging rail lines that offer more direct routes from the east coast to the west, interspersed o destinations in between and converting them to high speed rail. What are your thoughts?
Most Americans would still prefer cars. Except for inside the large cities, rail system won't be as popular as cars. American individualism also plays a role in it. Even with the fastest high speed rail, it will still take many hours to go from coast to coast. It is out of the question for going to the opposite side of the country to work on daily basis. As a long distance traveling, the airplane is still the better option. For medium distance, cars will remain as the most popular.

Rail system is more popular in countries with less per capita car ownership.
