I love boxers, they're smart and quirky usually, and you just can't help but to fall in love with them when you get to know them. Labs are also pretty sweet dogs.

These guys are wonderful. I like Shih Tzus, but from personal experience, they're very high maintenance.

I'm a big Jack Russel Terrier and Corgi fan. I also want to have schnauzers eventually but that's for another time... when I'm capable enough to afford the responsibilities that come with it.
I have Shih Tzus and I will totally agree with you on this one. I got bored of taking care of their long hair that one of my Shih Tzus is now brought to the groomers every 2-3 months so that his hair doesn't grow too long.
Although one thing I can say about them is they can be very smart. My 6 month old Shih Tzu already knows a some tricks while the 3 year old one has been catching up too.
I was wondering how it was to take care of bull dogs and basset hounds but I doubt I will be able to afford the vet bills if in case the diseases the breed are prone to would kick in.

As you can see by my avatar, I'm partial to poodles. I had one when I was a young girl and fell in love with how smart and loving they were. Now, some 30 years later, I have another poodle, Gigi. In between that time I've had several other breeds of dogs, and I can personally say that poodles will always be my favorite dog. Gigi is just as smart as my first poodle, and I completely get why they are referred to as the velcro dog. She is always next to someone on the couch, a bed or walking around the house; she is a clinger.
Yes, there is a lot of maintenence involved and I bath her weekly or bi-weekly and brush her hair almost daily (it would get matted if I didn't). But that extra grooming is so worth it to me. Poodles have hair, not fur, so it doesn't shed like dogs that have fur because it is so curly. Even when I brush her, there is very limited hair in the brush. And her hair smells so nice all the time. No doggie smell with poodle hair, even when she is due for a bath. Plus, I just love to run my fingers through that soft, fluffy hair. That's the comment I hear most from people who pet her: She's so soft!

I have owned and been close to many different breeds in my life. That includes some mix breeds, Labs, Cocker Spaniels, Collies, Poodles, Doberman Pinschers, Mini Pinschers, Yorkies, Jack Russell Terriers, German Shepherds, and Chows, to name a few.
I'd have to say my favorite breed is Lab. They have the right combination of energy and companionship. Once you get passed that overly wild first two years, they turn into wonderful dogs. They love people and are especially good with children.
After being around my brother's Yorkie, that would have to be my close second. He is so calm and relaxed. Just a mellow little guy.

TreeClimber, I believe your brother's Yorkie is one of the exceptions. I don't mean to offend any other Yorkie owners here, but I've owned one and I can honestly say that it was my least favorite breed. I'm sure there are plenty loveable, well-behaved ones out there, but mine was such a terror that he ruined me for this breed.
The first day I took him to obedience school the teacher told me Yorkies were not quick learners. Did my dog prove her right! It took him a few weeks to learn even the simplest commands, and then he'd only do them if he was in the mood to. He also knew how to work my last nerve because if I went downstairs to do laundry, he hated being alone so much that (I swear he did this on purpose) he'd poop in front of my front door so that when I opened it up after coming back inside, it would smear across my carpet. He knew he'd done wrong because he was already hiding under my couch when I opened the door. I had never owned a dog so difficult to train and stubborn. He had me in tears the few years I owned him with all the things he ruined in my home. I ended up giving him away to a woman who loved Yorkies. I hope she had better luck with him than I did.

I love the Labrador because I find that they are a very obedient and easy dog to train. I use to have a golden Labrador name Rocky and he was one of the best dogs. I really loved him, and considered us lucky to have had him for as long as we did, almost seventeen years. However, after Rocky passed we knew that we wouldn't be so lucky as the be able to get another golden Lab, these dogs are now in high demand and are just not that easy a breed to obtain now. However, we do have a fine Akita in Oso, and well he's suppose to be a Chihuahua but he looks more like a grey hound in Buddy the second.
