What is my cat saying? - Karen May Jones - 12-20-2012

There is something really weird going on with my cat. She is about four months old. She sits in the window sill and there is an old tree just outside the window. Squirrels and birds are all up and down this old half dead tree.

My kitty sits in the window and talks in some kind of weird language to them. She seems to be chirping at the birds. She is not meowing, but making a clickity clackity chirp sound. What on earth is she doing! I am going to try and video her doing this because it is way too funny!!

What is she saying to them?

I know exactly what you're talking about and that is so adorable! I've never seen a kitten that young doing it, so you should definitely get some footage to share. I have owned cats for most of my life and to tell the truth I'm not so sure what exactly the cats are saying when they do this. I have an old apple tree in my front yard with a couple of bird feeders and my cat does that all the time too, though he is a senior now. From what I can gather, your kitten is expressing that he is excited to see the animal activity. Perhaps he wishes to play with them or eat one. Either way share in your pets extreme joy and pleasure in watching the birds and squirrels.

Does she look calm? Perhaps she is warning the birds and squirrels. I would video her and then, take it to her vet. See what the vet says. I hope your kitten is not being stressed with those birds and squirrels. Or perhaps she is trying to talk to them. Does she do this to anyone else?

Perhaps she is trying to imitate the birds. Is she around any other kittens or cats? Perhaps she needs to hear other cats so she will know how to purr and meow.

In other words, I really don't know. It does sound funny. But I would check with your vet to make sure she is not being stressed out. Smile

Yeah, take a video and see what your vet thinks. It could just be your cat. Does she look like she's stalking the prey in the tree in any way? Or is she simply relating to them? My cat watches birds and squirrels, intently. But he doesn't talk to them. My cat does occasionally chirp, but he seems to do it when he's got something in his throat or when his normal meow sort of gets caught in his throat. Oh and if you take a video, post it here. I think we'd all love to see it! Maybe your cat thinks she's a bird? Haha. Where did you get her from? Maybe she was housed close to the birds at the pet store?

I have read that cats will do this as a hunting call for their prey.

I've seen cats do this often, it's quite normal. It is also very cute! I agree it's the excitement and perhaps also, as suggested, a prey call? They do sound a bit like birds when they do this. Really sweet. If you do check with a vet, though, I would be curious what the vet has to say.
