Should a dog with umbilical hernia have puppies? - maxen57 - 05-19-2016

When I first got Clio, I didn't notice that she had an umbilical hernia until I was already on my way home after purchasing her. I didn't think much about it because I thought it's natural in some puppies that would eventually go away. I brought her to the vet the same day and told me that it's repairable and can be surgically fixed or I can have her replaced since I only got  her after a few hours before bringing her in.  I can't afford the surgery but I didn't have her replace either.

I researched about the matter and found two separate articles. One article says she can't have puppies because umbilical hernia ia hereditary. One says that it's a random thing and one of the possible reasons why they get that condition is because the mother dogs have pulled the umbilical cords too hard. I've asked two separate vets who both said two different  things.

I want to be a pet grandma but if she can't have her own puppies, it's still okay. I just want her to be in perfect health.

It looks like my favorite dog has umbilical hernia. I already asked the vet who gave Barbie to me when she was 2 months old because as she grew up, I noticed that something is protruding in her tummy. The vet did not say it is umbilical hernia and she only said that it is natural. Now she is turning 4 so I do not mind that protruding thing. It is only now that I suspected it because of this thread. I checked the internet for pics and yes, it looks like Barbie has umbilical hernia.
