I think my cat would like a Miniture Dachsund to play with - Butterbelly's Buddy - 05-23-2016

I have a three year old orange tabby called Hank.  Hank is a very sociable cat and he's always bringing over the local neighborhood cats for treats when he thinks that maybe they're not getting enough at home.  He has a lot of feline friends and recently I noticed that he seemed a bit lost when his most recent friend stopped coming by,  I have always toyed with the idea of getting a small dog but worried that because I am such a cat person that I wouldn't really appreciate a dog as much as another cat, but I think that the cat I have now might actually do better with a small dog than another cat. Though Hank likes being friends with the local cats he doesn't really have that buddy buddy thing going that I think he'd like with another animal.  I know I must sound off my rocker but I really think he would do well with a breed like a miniature Dachshund.   What do you think?  Do you think a very social cat would do well with a small dog?

I would only get a dog if you have a chance to let them meet a couple times. Dogs and cats have very different needs. While Hank sounds very sociable, it could because other cats will leave eventually while a pet dog won't. Don't forget that dogs and cats socialized differently. While there may have been many cats, they are individual predators that tolerate each other because there is enough food to go around. Dogs are pack animals in comparison, we've even breed that trait strong so that they've become man's best friend. A dog might want to assert itself as alpha and that might curb Hanks natural social personality. Plus a dog might scare off the other cats and isolate Hank further. If you go through with it, you need to make sure that they get along and show no aggressiveness towards each other and that if the dog does become Hanks only friend, that they enjoy each others' company. Which can be hard to gauge since cats can be rather standoffish with anybody at first.

Good to know that your cat is really social, I used to have a cat that couldn't see me or any other person because it was so deadly, good luck with your cat!

I think it's better to have a cat and a dog, not two cats. I have two cats, two sisters. They often quarreled with each other and competed.

Threes company they say, so it's not surprising in the least

It should be better to have a cat and a dog, not two cats only. I have two cats, two sisters. They often quarreled with each other and competed. Or you have something in your house for a cat, so your cat can play!
