new aquarium - Mark Roberts-Stevens - 07-31-2016

Hi
recently bought a new aquarium, have set it all up and want to do a fishless and ammonia free cycle.
It has been running now for 2weeks,have added filter start, cranked heat up and even used bit of fish food occasionally.
Tested water today ammonia is at 0.50ppm
                               nitrate is at 20ppm
                               nitrite is at 0
Please can someone advise me if this is normal? When its safe to put fish in etc, would be very greatful for any advice
Thanks
Mark.

Hi Mark,

It is normal.

You need to keep adding more fish food every once in a while to keep the source of ammonia constant. The fishless cycling can take many weeks to complete. You are on the right track. Keep it up until you get the reading of 0ppm ammonia and 0ppm nitrite, with increasing amount of nitrate (while you are still dosing fish food).
