What tools do you use for grooming your Dog? - intothebleach - 08-16-2013

I have an Alaskan Malamute and a Husky x Mal. Some of you may know the breed but for those of you who don’t they are one of the breeds that have a double coat. They have the fluffy undercoat that helps keep them both warm in the winter and cool in the summer months plus a waterproof coat on top. When I worked in my Pub I used to send them to the groomers once a year to be bathed and groomed. I can do it myself now we have moved into a bungalow with a wet room. I was looking at new brushes the other day and I noticed the Furminator. I have spoken to other owners and it has received mixed reviews. I currently use the Mikki Brush and rake. What do you use

When I used to have dogs that shed a lot, I had a kind of grooming tool that was long and had little saw teeth on it. It could either be used opened up into a straight tool, or folded into a U-shape, and it looked like a curry comb for horses, but it was for long haired dogs instead.
When spring came, and my dog was shedding really bad, then I would take him outside, and bring a pocket full of dog treats to give him one now and then, and just sit out there with him, and groom as much of the shedding hair as I could get each day until he was finished shedding out the winter coat.
He was a white Pom, so there would be clouds of white fluff blowing away in the breeze.
Once he was done shedding, and just had the shorter summer coat, then I could use a regular brush on him to keep his coat groomed.

My two dogs decided that they anted to be groomed the other night so I used the basic rake. After much running around, Guinness decided she liked to be pampered and sat there very nicely for a good hour while I groomed her. I raked enough fur off her to stuff a few pillows. They look so much better now and their fur is getting ready for the Winter.
