How to start a fish-pond? - tess pfeif - 08-19-2014 I have enjoyed caring for fish in a tank and have a lovely little pond in my backyard that I would love to begin filling with fish. Sadly, I'm not quite sure where to start For reference, my pond resembles that one. It is a little bigger with a taller two-level waterfall. Koi are definitely an option, but I was wondering what are some other fish that could do well in a pond? I would like to have some diversity and not have all one type of fish, if possible. Also, are there merits in making in making a pond have "bi-levels" or a little half tunnel like the gorgeous pond pictured here? Also, are there any must-have plants? This is a bit of a far-off project and I wouldn't start until spring. Just wanted some opinions. Thanks so much! RE: How to start a fish-pond? - Thor - 08-20-2014 Hello tess, I am not able to see your images. Could you please provide the correct links? Where do you live? Nope, I am not asking for your address. Just need to know which state to get a good idea on the weather conditions there. How big is your pond? It is the best to know how many gallons of water it can hold. So we can get a good idea on how many fish and what kind of fish you are able to put in there. A fish pond should be set up similar to an aquarium. It will need a filter system running 24/7 to get rid of the ammonia. Unless you have a huge pond with tons of plants but only a handful fish. Koi is probably the number one choice for an outdoor pond. The choices for outdoor pond fish species are actually very limited. I am not sure why, maybe it is because they can easily turn into invasive species unlike the tropical fish species. |
