Keeping your dog's toenails clipped. - Happyflowerlady - 10-14-2014
One of the important parts of keeping your dog groomed is making aure that their toenaols are not getting too long. When the dog is outside a lot, and runs around on sand or gravel, hey will often keep their own toenails short enough.
Dogs that live inside, especially the little dogs, often have overgrown toenails. Clipping the toenails can be hard or easy, depending on the color of the toenails, and the disposition of the dog. My Chipper totally hates having his toenails clipped; and he squirms and yowls, making everything even harder to do. Tootsie, on the other hand , doesn't care if i trim hers.
If you have a dogs who hates being clipped, it might be worthwhile to take them to a groomer, espcially ifit is a dog that you have groomed anyway.

Unfortunately for us, our dogs will not let us even get close to their feet! We have to take them to the groomers and have them do it on a regular basis. Usually when they are in to be bathed and groomed, or when they are being boarded.
I know the importance of keeping up with this as it can be very dangerous to the dog if not taken care of. I had a friend that didn't do this in a timely manner and the dog snagged it's nail on the carpet and it was not a pretty site.
I just think, in general, we as pet owners need to keep up on these important things for our furry friends!

I think that some dogs will just let the vet or the groomer do things that the owner is not able to do. I have a friend who had an enormous Golden Retriever, and that dog would do about anything for Jill, she loved her so much. I think that Jill was just afraid thst she would clip the nails too close if she clipped Maggie's toenails herself. Not only that, Maggie was abig dog and her toenails were large and tough, so the vet probably had better clippers to do her toes with.
Now, she just has Ruthie, he little Pom, and I think that she iss fine to have her toenails clipped, and I have helped Jill clip them , too. But most of the time, Jill takes Ruthiss to the vet to be clipped, too.
I think it is just one of those thing where you have to make the best decision for yourself and your pet.

I'm the one in the household that clips my dogs nails. My husband is too afraid too. My malamute is fairly easy because she has white nails and it's easy to see the quick. My shepard has black nails so I get nervous sometimes clipping them. Usually when I can hear them nails on my kitchen floor is when I know it's time for a clipping. Recently my malamute got lose and was running around the neighborhood when I finally caught her, I noticed that she must of got get nail cut on something because she was bleeding. It was pretty painful for her because her quick was exposed. But within 4days the quick dried up and she was back to being herself. Both my dogs are pretty good at sitting there while I clip there nails. So I think I got lucky on that one. I have seen people have to mussel their dogs, so they don't get nipped.

Trimming of nails is one of my main problems with our dogs. We have 3 dogs. I have no problem with Barbie the pekingese because she is submissive when it comes to trimming the nails. But the 2 male dogs, Tisoy the spitz and Pipoy the pug, they are nasty when it comes to that chore. What I do is to bring Tisoy to the grooming salon because in the salon he is well behaved. With Pipoy, only the vet's assistant can trim his nails. Those 2 male dogs would bite us upon the sight of the nail cutter.

People fail to clip their dog's toenails either out of ignorance or forgetfulness. Long toenails are uncomfortable and unsightly. A simple method of clipping their toenails is to place them astride on a soft raised platform of them clip the nails as someone else continues with the rest of the grooming. This works well even for grumpy canines.

I only get to have my dog's toenails clipped every three months when I have the chance to take them to the groomer myself. There are actually pet nail clippers for sale but I don't know how they work and I'm terrified of hurting my dog. Clio doesn't like her two front paws being touched especially when I'm looking for ticks. But I am considering of just doing it myself because our floor is covered in tiles and it kind of makes it hard for her to run around when she looks like she's slipping. Plus, she tends to pick up a lot of dirt from the garden.
