new need help - jared185 - 06-06-2012 Hi I am new her and also new to insect keeping actually I want to start insect keeping and right now here's my question I have a 5 gallon aquarium that you would get from Walmart what is a good beginner insect that would do well in there and what do I need to get to keep it as far as equipment RE: new need help - Fishbone - 06-06-2012 Well, are you alright with all insects/arachnids? I would suggest a tarantula of some form. There are a fair amount of them around, they aren't too pricey, and there its allot of information available on care. Your going to need substrate, I've seen allot of people use vermiculite, with coconut fiber ontop of that. Something for the spider to hide in. I would add something it can climb on. If you have a room in the 80's, you don't really need heat, but you may depending on the room temperatures. http://www.tarantulaguide.com/pet-tarantulas-care-sheet/ RE: new need help - Ram - 06-06-2012 It really depends on what kind of insect or arthropod you are interested in. Are you into herbivore or carnivore? For herbivore, you can try silkworm, and butterfly. For carnivore, I would recommend mantis. They are awesome looking, and they can be easily accepted by more people than if you have a tarantula. For typical insects and arthropods, old newspaper or magazines will do just fine as substrate. RE: new need help - jared185 - 06-07-2012 Well I want a natural look can I use the dirt outside and do I need any equipment like heaters RE: new need help - Ram - 06-11-2012 (06-07-2012, 01:04 AM)jared185 Wrote: Well I want a natural look can I use the dirt outside and do I need any equipment like heaters What have you planned to get? Insects usually don't live through the winter and their life span aren't long at all. If you get a tarantula, you might need heat pack for it during the winter if you don't plan to heat your whole house. Where do you live? Heater is only needed at cold places. |
