Vaccination: What, When, and How Often - haopee - 06-12-2012

We all know why vaccinating is necessary. So now we tackle the What, When and How Often.

What?

Different countries have different rules when it comes to vaccinating. In my country, it isn't mandatory for dogs to be vaccinated unless they're about to travel or are show dogs. Luckily, most pet owners are now aware of the advantages of vaccinating thereby reducing the occurrences of diseases such as Parvo.

Our vaccination list include Parvo, Distemper, Adenovirus, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Coronavirus. We also have Leptospirosis shots because some areas have frequent flooding.

Although yearly rabies shots are funded by local government units, some still don't grab this opportunity to get it for free.

When?

Some veterinarians advice pet owners to start the immunization as early as 4-6 week. I still follow the 8 week rule. How old is your puppy when you have them vaccinated?

How Often?

Yearly immunization is encouraged in our country. But according to the American Animal Hospital association, the effectiveness of the DHLPP vaccination can last up to 3 years. My vet also recommends the 3 year gap for them. Do you have your dog immunized yearly?
