History - The domestication of pet fish - Ram - 06-18-2012

Does anyone know how the domestication of fish was started?
Who, where, when it was started?
How was it spread through out the world and become one of the most wild spread hobbies cross many different cultures?

I thought it all started with people in China keeping fish in captivity to eat later as food. Then some of the fish mutated. They were then selective breed into modern goldfish and koi, and from that point on those fish were kept for their look rather than as food. It happened almost 2,000 years ago if I am correct.

Does anyone else want to give a shot for more details? Big Grin
