Dealing with a bratty parrot - laurasav - 06-21-2012

Our Eclectus can be a real pistol sometimes. When we lived at our previous house, he had his cage in the livingroom. He was always the center of attention, watched TV with us, ate with us, had a big play structure to hang out on, etc.
I didn't want his mess in our new house though, so he is in a separate room, along with our Quaker now. We spend a great deal of time in this room with them (it's where the computers are!), so they're not being neglected.
However, when we are in the livingroom now, with the TV on at night, he gets very rambunctious! He teases the Quaker to get her screaming, he bangs stuff around, and yells stuff out at us to try to get our attention. Sometimes we'll bring him out to hang out with us just to keep him quiet. However, I don't like reinforcing his bad behavior. I understand his frustration and desire to want to be with us, but he can NOT be in the livingroom whenever he wants to be! He cannot get used to having his own way whenever he acts up.

It also upsets the Quaker when we take the Eclectus away with us or pay him more attention. The Quaker is afraid of leaving her/his room. She's not potty trained either like the Eclectus is. Plus with her being so much tinier, she is not safe to being around the cats in the livingroom.

How would you handle this situation?

Well, he has finally broken us down and we are making a point of going in and bringing him out into the livingroom with us almost every night now. He has really blossomed since we've been doing this too. For at least a couple years he has been feather plucking regularly and looking so ugly, but now all of a sudden he is gorgeous again. All of his turqouise and red and dark blue feathers have come back in, ones we thought would be lost for good. And his green feathers are all back again too, looking lustrous and healthy again. I guess the poor little guy seriously missed his nightly TV time with us!
