Do you have a trust fund for you dog? - Tasha - 06-29-2012

Massachusetts, where I live, passed a law in 2011 that allowed me to set up a trust fund for the care of my dog when I pass. Being a senior this gives me a great deal of peace of mind knowing that each of my pets will be well cared for after I am gone. Has anyone else done this?

I've never heard of such a law. But that's great Thumbsup because most seniors do still like the companionship of their fur babies and this can make it easier for them to give the pet a secure future.

I was just wondering who'd take care of the pet if the owner passes away.

We don't have a trust fund, but we do know who we want to look after our two cats if anything does happen to us. What we do have is an emergency pet account with a few hundred dollars in it to ensure we have the money if something happens to them (cross my fingers nothing happens!)

I have never heard of such a law before, though I know of wealthy people who have left their whole estate to their pet. How does setting up this trust fund work? Do you set aside a certain about of your estate for the care of your dog? Do you name a person to take care of your dog if something happens to you?

I think this is an interesting idea. I've always worried what would happen to my dog should something happen to me. I know that someone in my family would take her in. But, it's still a worry.
