my cat is starting to get on my nerves - leelawd - 07-08-2012
my cat has started to develop some sort of need for someone to open a door for it if she know's there is someone nearby.
she used to just push them open with ease and still does if she doesnt notice anyone around but the moment she see's someone or knows someone is in the room she wants in,
she will start like.. tapping at the door with her claws like she is saying, please open this door for me and looks up at you with those really cute irresistible cat eyes.. i dont know if its because she is 14 years old or something else
but it is really getting to me when im trying to sleep at night, even though my door is the easiest to open in the entire house you barely even have to push it. also she does this for at least 5 minutes before she attempts to open the door and 'fails' to and starts doing it over and over again for another 2 tries till she leaves of opens the door.
is it lazyness? or has it mabey been something that caused it?
anyway is there anyway to stop her from doing this? it would be greatly appreciated

Maybe its a senility thing? Sometimes cats get really quirky when they get up there in age.
Or maybe its an attention thing? Or maybe a little of both. Either way, I can see how it would be annoying. Do you get up and open it for her every time she does this?

I agree with the first responder, it's most likely because of old age. If you get a spray to put on the door the cat is scratching or even a tape, the cat will stop it. We learned this when they first moved into the new apartment and it hasn't failed (from time to time they act up, but most of them they are fantastic).

That was my first thought too, that it's her age and she's getting senile. Poor old girl! I like andrew's suggestion of putting sticky double-sided tape up on your door so she won't want to touch it anymore. If you don't mind her being in your room, perhaps you could leave your door ajar so she can get in easier. Also, try to resist opening any door for her that she's been able to open on her own. If she realizes she can only go in a door by her own effort, perhaps she'll quit "asking" others to do it for her.

My Jack Russell terrier was doing the same thing recently. When he wanted to come in, he would reach through the hole in the screen door and tap his nails on the tile floor. I would hear the sound and hurry over to open the door.
This went on for a couple of weeks and I began to get annoyed and feel like my dog's servant when I had to drop what I was doing to open the door.
Then one day, I just stopped answering the dog's knocks at the door.
It was an, ominous gloomy day outside and it was about to rain. Then the dog heard a clap of thunder, and I imagine that he said to himself "Screw this, I give up." because then I saw him push the screen door open with his nose and come in the house.
Problem solved.
