Escaping chimp killed in Las Vegas - Ram - 07-14-2012

The female chimp was tranquilized, while the male chimp was shot dead by the police as he was crossing the street.

What do you think of the whole incident?
Poor chimp, I have to say...

Shoot first, ask question later seems to be the "normal" reaction of humans when dealing with animals.
The owner said the male chimp was simply crossing a street when he was shot. The police's excuse was "There were a lot of people on the other side of the street". I don't think this is fair. Shot someone just because what/who he is (a chimp), not because what he did. Racism? Species(ism)?

I think the cop should be arrested and charged with murder. Seriously, it's way high time to have an Animal Bill of Rights. Yes, animals have rights, too. Just because they can't vote doesn't mean that they can be abused. Or killed.

I doubt you can do that. Cops can often get away with shooting human suspects to death. Never mind killing a chimpanzee.

I don't think the cop should have done what he did, but I don't think he should charged. He was trying to protect the civilians. He was afraid the chimp would hurt people. We all have opinions though.

The cops can get away with it because we allow them to get away with it. Seriously speaking, no one is above the law and the laws are made by us. If we have laws that allow cops to kill without justification, then we must change those laws. The last I checked, cops are not super inviolable beings.

The chimpanzees are powerful and they had even been violent to their owner. I get that they had to stop him before he got too close to people but they should have tranquilized him instead of outright killing him.

Which chimpanzee are you talking about? Generalization much? Big Grin

Every chimpanzee is different, just like humans.

It's like saying "Humans are violent and will shoot all animals on sight". For the record, I have never fired a real gun before. Those humans with itch fingers in front of wild animals aren't me.

What other chimpanzees had done in the past got nothing to do with this chimpanzee.
