Emperor Scorpions as Pets - Mudd04 - 07-16-2012

I have known several people who kept Emporer Scorpions (larger black scorpions) as pets. They aren't the cute and cuddly type of pet but can be interesting to have around and watch. A well cared for scorpion can live an average of 6 to 8 years so they aren't a temporary pet to have.

This type of scorpion is not usually extremely aggressive and does not have very strong venom which is similar to a bee sting though best to avoid getting stung whenever possible since there is a possibility of allergic reaction.

Emperor Scorpions are mostly nocturnal, and like to hide under decorations as well as dig burrows in their habitat. They are originally from Africa and do best in warm and humid environments. Diet usually consists of things like vitamin dusted crickets, mealworms and will even eat small lizards.

What do you think of keeping scorpions as pets, any tips or experience to share?

I've never had a scorpion as a pet but I've often found myself looking at them at the pet store and wondering what sort of pet they'd make. Personally I'm more into the type of pet I can hold and interact at with but I think they'd be an interesting pet to watch, especially since I've heard that scorpions glow under a black light!
