yet another addition to my ever growing reptile collection! - amanda509 - 09-27-2012

well, spock will be rehomed hopefully this weekend, but his place will be quickly filled :p within the next week or so ill be getting a pair of kenyan sand boas! theyre very small and very pretty! getting them for a great deal from a friend of mine! they are an unrelated, sexed pair so maybe some breeding will take place in a year or so. this is not the exact pic, but this is what they look like and how small they are right now!

im turning into a reptile hoarder Sad but hopefully once spring is here, my efforts will pay off with some beautiful leopard gecko babies!

Getting more snakes? I thought you are more into lizards. Smile

This little guy is as small as an earthworm. Is it the size of an adult of this snake species?

im into all reptiles, just havent been able to keep snakes because of my parents. and no, that is a young snake, they will grow to about 2 feet long and will get quite thick...but they will keep their beautiful coloration Smile

haha yea..theyre actually pretty close to the brahminy blind snakes when theyre babies..but they get much larger. still havent had any luck in getting any of those guys :/ cant wait till my geckos start producing in spring...gunna have babies everywhere! :3

Did you ever send that guy a message? I'm pretty sure he produces some every year, and doesn't advertise them much anymore as he seems to have become a go to guy for those and he sells them all without advertising.

okay! heres the pics! i have two, but i only took pics of one because my mom is convinced i only got one :p and i cant be posting pics of two and getting myself in trouble!

i was also given this cave gecko by the same guy. he had gotten it in a trade with a bunch of other animals. all the rest were healthy, but this little gecko has mbd very badly. he can barely use his one arm. ill try my best to nurse him back to health. he has rubber looking joints and his spine is messed up. he also looks quite skinny as i can count his ribs when he breathes..he just doesnt wanna eat, so ill be making a mash and giving him liquid calcium until he feels better..

Very cool Manda! Poor little Goniurosaurus. I really like those guys, definitely on my uncommon want list, along with some leaf tailed geckos (Uroplatus), especially the satanic leaf tails. Keep us updated on both. Smile

haha, i didnt even know there was such a thing as a cave gecko! but the leaf tails are deff cool Wink thanks for the reply on yahoo, ill deff get some of that, but im still trying to find a correct dosage of the calcium citrate at least until the stuff you recommended gets here. the gecko needs calcium in him asap before the mbd moves to his jaw and he cant eat :/ i put some powder calcium with d3 on his nose lastnight and also dusted his worms with it, if he ate any. last time i checked, he hasnt eaten much. he does move around tho, but its normally to find a new resting place to lay. i did mathmatically find out the dosage for him that would be equivilant for a human, but i have a feeling it is a little low due to the higher calcium, body mass ratio. it came out at .17 mg...i may round it up to .20. i think until that new stuff gets here, im going to make a paste out of a single pill and split it into ten parts and give one part daily, half in morning, half at night, along with a drop from the liquid gel which is calcium with d3 maybe once or twice a week? he does have a severely broken arm, but it looks like its healed, just not correctly. ugh, cases like this make me sad Sad

Sorry Manda, I was at work when I answered that, lol. Just did a little research before actually venturing my opinion. Calcium citrate contains roughly half the amount of available calcium by weight as calcium carbonate. And it is actually a salt, so I wouldn't compare measurements by volume, just by weight. i.e. 1 teaspoon of calcium citrate is not comparable to the equal amount ofcalcium carbonate, but 1 gram of each would be easier to compare accurately, 1 gram of calcium citrate has half the available calcium of 1 gram of calcium carbonate.)

That liquid calcium glubionate is the best stuff going. The recommended dosage is 0.1ml/cc pet 100 grams of body weight. So if the little guy its 20 grams, that would be .02ml, or 2 units on a feeding/dosage syringe, or a u100 insulin syringe.
Just my two cents, but I would do that once, then half that dose daily for a bit. And make sure he stays hydrated. There is definitely such a thingas too much calcium, and if that dies happen, and they can't flush it out, you can end up with calcification of the kidneys and other organs.

thank you so much! i did order that stuff today Smile should be here in 3-4 days. in the meantime, ill be getting the zilla calcium spray tomorrow morning, the second ingredient is calcium gluconate, which is similar to the carbonate. i can give him 2 or 3 drops of that right on his nose.

tonight, i poked a hole in one of the calcium with d3 gel capsules and gave him about 2 licks of that, and i made a slurry from crushed mealworms, plain calcium, and water to keep him hydrated. he took in a good bit of that from a dropper. he was a champ. im really concerned about his one leg though, it looks broken, but im not sure if it is healed that way and too late to set it or not...im going to wait till he gets a little stronger before i mess with it though. heres some horrid pics i got of him tonight before his feeding.

I absolutely adore Kenyan sand boas...such cute little worms lol. I should add some to my collection of scale babies. Though most of mine are BCI's Those worms are much bigger and will eat you out of house and HOME, but I love them.
