Does your dog beg for food in an unusual way? - sandooch - 09-29-2012
Gigi really knows how to work it when she sees you eating anything. I know I should really teach her to not even get up on the couch while we eat, but she just looks so cute when she begs for food that I can't help but let her stay on the couch. What she does is if you have your leg bent on the couch with your foot resting flat on the sofa and knee bent up so that your thigh is verticle (hope I'm explaining this right...wish I had a picture to post of it), she will rest her head up on your knee, with her nose pointing up to the ceiling and look at you sideways with the most pitiful eyes. She keeps this stance until you give her something, which I cave into all the time.

One funny thing Misha does is she slaps your leg with her paws. I'll be sitting on the couch or at the dinner table eating. She's waiting patiently sitting on the floor. But, if she thinks I've forgotten her, she sneaks over and hits me on the leg or foot a couple of times as a reminder. Sometimes she'll do this when I'm making my meal. It's sort of like "Hurry up! I'm waiting down here for you to drop something!"
But, the funniest thing she does is when there is something she really loves to eat in the room. This is usually toast with peanut butter on it. She goes into the kitchen to watch you make it. Then, when you head into the living room, she runs by and launches herself off the ottoman. She is literally thrown backwards from the force. If that's not enough, she follows it up with three or four leaps straight in the air about four feet high off the ground. I think she's trying really hard to perform so she'll get a tidbit. (I call the leaps "jump for joy". She will do them on command.)

That is so cute! Gigi will also do the paw thing if you don't give her something. It's very gentle, but it is like they're saying, "Hey, do you see how patiently I'm waiting here."
She'll also do the saddest little whine once in a while if both the other tactics don't work. It practically rips your heart out. How in the world do the instinctively know how to make the saddest puppy eyes ever when they want something from your plate? All they need is a Sarah McLachlan song playing in the background and, I swear, they've got you wrapped around their little paws.

I remember the original Buddy trying to beg food from one of my brother's. He actually sat in front of him looking up at him with his sad little eyes. My brother just kept trying to ignore him and continued eating. Buddy started to whine in a sad way and finally my brother gave into him.

My dog didn't bed when she was around. However, if you would ask her (or tell her) the word "food" she would react differently. If you said "food" and if she cocked her head then she'd be hungry. If there was no reaction then she wasn't. She was a smart dog I tells yas.
