Did my kitten get cold after a bath? - truongthanh - 01-13-2016
Hello,
I have 2 kitten Niki (black) and Nico (Tabby) and they are 10 and 13weeks old.
However Niki has really bad habit of handling his stool and always mess all those brown stuff all over himself while trying to bury them. I decided to give him a quick warm bath but then the next day I found out some discharge on the right eye only.
Nico had flu nearly month ago and now fully recovered and I don't believe he had passed it on to Niki.
My question is he is sick now or something else has caused the problem? I know bringing him to the vet is the best but I know the vet is gonna give the same prescription and it's very costly to do so (visited the vet 3 times already in December).
Can I use those medicine previously left over by Nico which are antibiotics panacur 10% to treat Niki?

To be honest even though I know that owning a pet and trips to the vets can be expensive, I wouldn't take the risk of just assuming your cat as got a cold or flu, and using older ointment on it just in case.
Personally I'd be inclined to think of the worst case scenario and I wouldn't want to take the risk because if it's not a cold, then the ointment could potentially make it worse, and I don't think it's worth the risk.

My advice is to call your veterinarian and ask them if you can use the antibiotics on your other kitten. Be aware, that antibiotics have to be administered for a certain amount of days as prescribed, and if there is not enough left for you to give, then it won't work properly and it could start up another infection.
Generally, with little kittens, they are so fragile and could take a turn for the worst in a very short amount of time, as they haven't built up a good immune system as an older cat would have.
Please don't take chances. Your kittens are probably both due for booster shots, so you'll want to take them in for checkups anyway. Please give us an update on how things are going for your dear little kitties. Sickness sucks!

I personally don't think the antibiotic used to treat Niki would harm Nico for the simple reason that the antibiotic will simply act on the bacteria buy not on the cat's physiology though they do have some minor side effects the worst being an allergy. But it doesn't take long to clear. But caution should be taken on injectable antibiotics since view in directly into the circulatory system. In all cases, a vet should only be a phone call away in case of any complications.

This MAY be serious. My kitten got so sick she almost died when she was about a month and a half old. I had to give her baths because she had fleas, but I didn't realize the shampoo my grandma gave me to bathe her was for 8mo old cats and older! I bathed her several times with it and one night she went limp in my arms, vomiting up all her formula and having bloody stool. We rushed her to the hospital. She was fine after an overnight hospital stay, but it cost me 800 dollars. I was so scared and even the veterinarian was worried she wouldn't make it. Read the backs of ALL the products you use on your kitties. Worst case scenario, get a care credit card so you can pay for your kitty's vet bills. This may not be what you want to hear, but having a pet is a very huge responsibility. I'm really sorry and I do hope it's nothing serious!
