Pet Snapping Turtle - dashboardc33 - 10-31-2012
We found a little snapping turtle in the middle of the road this summer. He is still living with us. We have him in a big enough container. He has made it 4 months already and eats almost everyday. We usually give him flies, worms, beetles, moths; pretty much anything we can find in our house or outside of it. I am a little concerned about winter approaching. I know they hibernate during the winter time and dig really deep under the sand. I don't have more than 3 inches of sand in his container. Do you think he will make it or should I let him go before?

Where do you live? How cold does it get over there?
I used to have a little turtle about two decades ago until its magical escape. You should feed turtle with meat and fish. My turtle's staple food was pork, on occasion we threw him a fish.
As for hibernation, since our indoor temperature was kept pretty warm all the time, we didn't do anything special for our turtle. However, I did notice the turtle was less active, so we kept water very shallow and it did not need to raise its long neck in order to breath outside water.
One of my aunts also have had a turtle for more than three decades now. What she does every winter is to drain the turtle tank, so there is no water left in there, and she just cover the turtle with a small piece of clothes.
Do not use sand to "bury" the turtle. I have heard story of turtle died when it was dug up in the spring.
