A lot of people don't realize how much other animals can interact and bond with their humans. I often run into people who are shocked that I actually take my bird to the vet. They just don't think of birds as "real pets." :/
Cats and dogs seem to bond with people a lot more than many other animals. Plus, they are a convenient size and can be kept indoors. Cats may be left alone for a day or two as long as they have a litter box and plenty of food and water. It is also nice for some people who live alone to have a pet, as they have someone to come home to. (This is not the case for all single people, however.)
