I grew up having both, although it was a ratio of one dog to several cats and the cats were all indoor and the dog was almost entirely outdoor (expect in the winter when it was really cold.) I love both cats and dogs but I'd have to say that generally speaking I prefer cats, although I'd love to have my own dog someday. I think it's a combination of their size and their fierce independence that I love about cats. It always seemed to me that dogs would love just about anyone but with cats you really had to earn their affection.
