I have never owned a cat but I have over the years owned multiple dogs. I think generally, dogs seem to be more friendly and more accustomed to spending time around humans. Cats on the other hand, seem to like to do their own thing more and may often leave the house and not come back for many hours. I think cats are better equipped to live on their own as they are not only more agile than dogs, but their personality in general makes it this way. I still think that cats however make great pets. My uncle owns 3 beautiful cats and they are really well behaved. Overall though, I just find dogs more appealing because they have a better personality than cats in general.
