RE: Bed Bugs
From what I have been reading about bedbugs, they have pretty much become epidemic all over the United States. it used to be that they were mainly found in the southern states, but since they are an indoor-living bug, they actually would be able to survive in any climate , as long as they are inside a persons house and can keep warm. I am pretty sure that extreme cold will kill them, so if a house has been empty all winter, and not heated; then it should not have any living bugs in there.

Even the exterminators have a hard time getting rid of bedbugs, and most of the bug sprays on the market will not kill a bedbug.
One article that I read said to take a plastic pop bottle, cut off the top and put a mixture of water, sugar and yeast in the bottom. (As the yeast ferments, it makes carbon dioxide, which attracts the bedbugs. ) Then, you put the top back on, with the bottle neck inside, and wrap a paper towel around the outside so that the bedbug can crawl up the outside and climb into the bottle, where it is trapped.
If you get some bedbugs inside the bottle, then you will at least know that you have some in the house.
