When I went to the aquarium store that has the outdoor ponds and such, they also have the goldfish and Koi there. the koi are very expensive, so i would probably only get goldfish when we get a pond made out in the yard, but even the goldfish seem to be very interactive with people.
I had a friend with a koi pond, and his fish would come right up when he and his wife went out to feed, or even just look at the fish. They put their faces right out of the water looking for a treat.
When I was little, there was a large pond, just out of town, and it was full of goldfish, some of them very large ones. They were colorful, and some had the wavy tails and were very beautiful.
We caught a few and had them outside in a large tank, and they were a lot of fun to look at and feed.
I am looking forward to making a small pond in the yard this summer, and having some fish again.
