How to tell when your bird is bored?
My lovebird often just sits in his cage and doesn't do much. When he is interested in a toy, it is only those that he can shred. That's not a problem at all, but I was just wondering if he sits there because he is bored? He has plenty of toys to play with that he enjoys, but chooses to sit there. Is there anything I can do to make him feel more comfortable playing?

As far as I know lovebirds are supposed to come in 2s. I think your lovebird is said becuase it doesn't have a companion. I remember my uncle telling us before that we have to take care of the love birds that he gave us becuase he has noticed that when one dies, the other follows after a while. This has been his observation because he has lots of birds in his place. I think you should find your bird a companion. Make sure its of the opposite sex.

Lovebirds do prefer company, be it human or another lovebird, either sex is fine if bought young. If because of work commitments you don't have the time to "play" with your pet then a cage mate is the way to go.
They also prefer tall rather than long cages where they can climb about using claws and beak. Like all parrot like birds they love pulling things apart and the introduction of pieces of tree branch will keep them busy, and help stop their beak becoming overgrown to the point where it needs trimming.
Check on the wood first though. Make sure it is none toxic and hasn't been treated with herbicides/pesticides before placing in the cage.

RE: How to tell when your bird is bored?
The sign of being bored for a pet bird? It can vary from bird to bird. Some birds will pull their own feather out when they are extremely bored or frustrated. Some birds will attempt to destroy stuff around them. From what I was told, it is recommended to rotate toys for your pet birds rather than putting too many toys in there at once. They can get bored of the same toys if they are available all the time.

Many species of pet birds also require human attention if they are kept alone. Some birds require at least an hour or so of your attention each day. If you are unable to provide the much needed attention, they can become depressed and it is unhealthy for them. It is a better idea to find them a companion if you don't have time to spare.
