cats having period
So all female mammal have period. Cat is no exception.

How often do they get their period?
Any unusual activities you can see during that time?
Is there any special care required for them?

What do you do to avoid cat blood making a mess during their period?

RE: cats having period
I don't know anyone whose female cats had a period. I think if you spay a female cat it will no longer have a period. Here in New Zealand unless you are a registered breeder it’s compulsory to spay your cat. I have heard that even spayed cats feel a little tended and uncomfortable during that time of the month, whether this is true or not I'm unsure.

RE: cats having period
Cats don't really have a "period". A "period" is ovulation, either spontaneously or on a reproductive cycle. Ovulation in cats is induced by mating, each time they mate they release an egg, at least ideally that's how it happens. That its how a cat can have kittens from different fathers in one litter. They do go into "heat" when they are receptive, which honestly isn't all thai pleasant in my opinion, but there is no bleeding. All of this is in non-sprayed cats of course. This its the first site I could find with info.

How come I have heard of people saying the cat had period and made a mess with blood on the bed? Was it made up?

There could be a few possible reasons for people saying that. It could be that those people are confusing cats with dogs. Bitches come into heat once every six months. And when they do, it gets a bit messy.

Tabbies, on the other hand, are receptive almost all the time. I have kept many tabbies and have never seen any sign of messiness.

Another possibility is that those people are confusing cats with people. They know that women menstruate and they assume that cats also do the same thing. They might have reasoned that if cats don't menstruate, cats cannot get pregnant and since cats do get pregnant, they assume that cats must menstruate.

RE: cats having period
I have to agree with Victor, I've never seen nor heard of that happening. I don't qualify myself as anything close to an expert on this, but I have had non fixed females and never seen any such thing. I would think something else happened, and maybe they just assumed the cat was having a period? Without getting graphic and keeping this family friendly, males have certain attributes on certain parts of their anatomy, that induce ovulation during mating, and with a healthy female, that should be the only time they ovulate. I'm sure there must be other things that could stimulate this, and possibly induce ovulation in a female, but as far as I know, that is extremely uncommon.

Remember; cats wash themselves, including their rear end!

Well, dogs do that, too, but when a bitch is in heat, it is very obvious. So the only conclusion that I can make is that cats do not exhibit any external signs of being in heat. Which is not too difficult to understand since female cats seem to be already ready to welcome suitors, so to say. It's like they are in heat just about all the time, so we wouldn't be able to see any difference.

RE: cats having period
I, personally, have never seen a female cat have her "period". The others have pretty much summed it up where female cats are concerned.

If a female cat is bleeding from there, I would take her to the vet. It could be the start of pyometria (inflammed and puss-filled uterus) which is fetal if untreated. We went through that will one of our female cats last August. We didn't know she was THAT sick and we got there within a day or so of her dying - that close.
