Does your pet want to join you in the bathroom?

Does your pet want to join you in the bathroom?
I've seen a lot of adorable photos of people's pets trying to get into the bathroom (and sometimes succeeding). For my personal experience, when I was living alone, sometimes I would leave the bathroom door open (no fan because it was a poorly built apartment -- something else I'll need to remember to ask about next time I'm looking for a place). My cat would immediately follow me in and proceed to twine around my legs purring and headbutting me. I don't understand why he feels the sudden need to bond with me when I'm there. I'm in a similar sitting position on the sofa or in a chair other times, and he's not like that.

Here's a comic that sort of sums it up:

Does your pet exhibit a similar special desire to be with you if you're going to the bathroom?

My little dog follows me everywhere, including the bathroom. She likes to lay on the floor and watch!! And when I am in the shower she lays on the floor outside the shower and I have to be careful not to step on her. When my daughters rat terrier mix was small he would lay in her pants around her feet and fall asleep there!

Chipper always follows me into the bathroom, too. At least he doesn't do the "twining around my feet" thing like the cat in the cartoon ! he doesn't like bathrooms since that is where he has to go to get bathed, but, on the other hand, he seems to feel that it is his responsibility to escort me to the bathroom and make sure that I am safe while in there. So, he sits just inside the bathroom door, a good compromise in his eyes. He is doing his protective duty; but can easily make a fast escape should a bath for him look forthcoming.
If I go in any other room, he is always right there, too; since he doesn't have to worry about baths anywhere else.

At the moment I do not have any animals that join me in the bathroom. I do have a beagle that waits outside the bathroom door and a cat that will scratch at the door. I used to have a Pomeranian that would whine until I would let him in the bathroom with me. I vowed that after my Pomeranian was no longer with me, their would be no more animals joining me in the bathroom.

One of my cats follows me into the bathroom all the time and tries to get on my lap, but she ALWAYS wants to be on my lap, so it isn't unusual. The other two aren't really "lap cats", but they always feel like they are on the wrong side of a closed door. One of them hangs out in the bathroom with me while I get ready for bed, and then she'll follow me into the bedroom for snuggles. Two of the three like playing in the bathtub for some strange reason.

Yes! My black cat, Sugar, loves to sit on the toilet when I am taking a shower. When I done and pull open the curtain, she is staring up at me. Then I ask her if she enjoyed her daily steam shower. She replies back with a meow and leaves the bathroom. My white cat, Flour, is nuts. He will follow us into the bathroom and sit in the sink while we are there. He has never tried to sit on my lap, thank goodness! I would not put it past him though.

When I had cats, they almost always followed me whenever I went into the bathroom, and since that was where the cat litter box was; then they used their "bathroom" while I used mine. Then , I would always clean out the litter box, so it would not smell bad; so it actually worked out to being a good thing.
Cats will sometimes just follow people around just like dogs do. When I was growing up, we had several cats that had "adopted" us, and they were all outside cats because my mom would not let animals in the house.
We had a rental house just down the street a block or so, and when the house was empty, she and I would go down in the evening to work on cleaning it, and getting it ready for the next renter. We always walked down there, and always had a procession of the dogs and the cats following along behind us.
The dogs would trot right along beside of us, but the cats would go a ways, sit down and meow that they didn't want to walk anymore (or something ?) and then come bounding along to catch up with us again. Even though they grumbled, they always followed along whenever we walked down there.

All the time! I have three cats. When they are outside every morning, they would usually wait on me while I am preparing for work. While I am eating, they would be staring at me. While I am brushing my teeth, they would be sitting on my feet. When I am in the bathroom, they would scratch the door because they want to be let it. Of course, I would take pity on them. I would open the door, let them in, and endure their stares. It's really unnerving sometimes. You know how unblinking cats can be when they stare, right? Other times, it would be annoying, too because they would topple the shampoos and other stuff on the sink. If I didn't love my cats so much, I would have gone crazy a long time ago.

Oh yes!!! I always have company in the bathroom. Sometimes all 4 of our pets want to come in all at once! It's a sight to see I'm sure. I try to ignore them at times but they certainly make themselves known. Smile They try to jump on my lap and my cats rub on the bottom of my legs. If I pretend I don't see the cat he will jump up on the counter and actually stare at me. Smile

If I should make it in without company, I always see little cat paws reaching from underneath the door. Smile

I love them so and honestly couldn't imagine life without them. Smile

Feeling blessed,
Danyel Smile

My youngest cat never loves me more than when I'm on the toilet. I don't get it. If I want to sit with her on the couch, she can't be bothered or has better things to do, but when I'm on the toilet, she is purring loudly and rubbing up against my legs. Our bathroom has louvre doors and she soon figure out that she can open it by reaching in a the middle, where the split in the door is. I put a latch on it, and she soon figured out that if she jiggles the door rapidly, it will sometimes come out. Failing that, she will sit outside the door and howl like I had locked her out in a thunderstorm or something. She's the only one I've had that did that though, although I had a Siamese once who would climb into a full bath with me.

RE: Does your pet want to join you in the bathroom?
My first dog used to love it in the beginning when he came home. He must have decided my outraged howls weren't worth it. The first time he did that, I was in the shower and completely oblivious. By the time, my brain fully registered the sud-covered, excitedly-wriggling mass of fur around my legs, my mouth had already proceeded with a blood-curdling scream. We tumbled out and followed the tango with a solid horizontal thud straight out, taking the shower curtains with us...

Great story, Miranda ! ! I can just visualize all of that happening as I was reading your narrative of the episode.
Most dogs , even when they like water, do not seem to enjoy having to take a bath for some reason. I do think that they like it better when their owner is also in the shower with them though. I once had a beautiful white Boxer, and when I got her; she hated having a bath. I had to drag that big dog into the bathtub. After the bath, I was as wet and sudsy as she had been.
The next bath, I decided it made more sense just to take the shower along with her, and I dragged her in again.
She liked it better since I was in the shower with her, and the next shower was even easier.
Eventually, she got to where she just loved getting in the shower and having the warm water running all over her while I scrubbed her back. Since she was all white, she was always needing a bath; so it was good when she decided that she like being bathed.

My grandma's cat would do that sometimes, though he never tried to get on my lap. He would want to come in with me and then watched me. As a kid I was not used to that so it was really, really awkward. He also sat and watched me change clothes once and that was really weird to have a pair of eyes on me, even though it was just a cat.

My friends have a dog that doesn't like it when someone is in the bathroom and she will sit outside the door and "guard" it until they are done. She tried to come in with me, but I didn't let her, it's too crowded in that bathroom anyway. She is a sheltie, and my friends think she doesn't like it because we are her herd, and when someone is in the bathroom it's like they are missing.
