Lovebirds do prefer company, be it human or another lovebird, either sex is fine if bought young. If because of work commitments you don't have the time to "play" with your pet then a cage mate is the way to go.
They also prefer tall rather than long cages where they can climb about using claws and beak. Like all parrot like birds they love pulling things apart and the introduction of pieces of tree branch will keep them busy, and help stop their beak becoming overgrown to the point where it needs trimming.
Check on the wood first though. Make sure it is none toxic and hasn't been treated with herbicides/pesticides before placing in the cage.
