When and what was your first pet?

My first pet was a dachshund/cocker spaniel cross that I named Charlie. I was thirteen. We didn't haven him long--maybe six months--and he contracted rabies and had to be put to sleep. It broke my heart. I didn't have another pet of my own until I was in my twenties. I still feel the loss today.
