Maybe rather than sense how you feel about it, the snakes simply don't like to be shaky.
I have heard people could "destroy" a snake by shake it really hard, so its bones can be damaged. Jerky, shaky movements pose a threat to them I guess.
But, if you have a nervous snake, who is still uncomfortable around people, if you reach in to pick him up calmly, smoothly, without fear, you well get a different reaction than if you reach in, with any kind of jerky, shaky motion. If that makes sense.
