Well, the Kong treats are stuffed inside the beehive and only a little portion of it is exposed. And although Kong recommends their specially made treats to be stuffed inside of it, you can still use other treats. The Everlasting Treat Ball in the link needs refills, but according to the reviews they're durable (and that's always a good sign).
I've seen a dachshund ruin her "beehive" because she got too excited of chewing it.
