Cat is Getting Fat?
For someone reason, our younger cat has gotten very "roly poly" for unknown reasons. Her food intake hasn't increased, and she only gets about a cup of food once a day. She hasn't had any health problems, and her excerise levels are about the same. I thought it was maybe winter weight or something (I noticed this back in Feb.) but it's the middle of June and she's the same weight. She's seemed to maintained this amount of "rolliness" and hasn't gotten any bigger, but what does it mean? Does cats sometimes just randomly gain weight? :o_o:

Hm how old is she? Sometimes as cats get older they just need less food to maintain their weight, just like humans. Do you know how many calories are in that cup of food? Chances are it's too much. You'd be surprised how little food cats actually need but this greatly depends on the calorie content. You can check the bag or do a quick Google search to get the amount of calories per cup. Was she spayed recently? That also decreases the amount of food they need to maintain their weight. I can help calculate how many calories she needs a day based on her weight, age and whether she's spayed or not. Cats also sometimes just have a "fat pad" underneath their belly that kind of sways and hangs down lol. My vet said that this is normal because of how sedentary house cats usually are.

When I had cats, the only time they seemed to gain weight was after spaying/neutering and again as they got older,, 10+ years. I always played with them a lot with different cat toys,, rolling balls for them, playing with the feathers on the end of sticks, ect. Plus they always played with each other a lot. They would still develop the "belly pouch." It was so funny to see my big gray cat run with the "belly pouch" swaying!

If you get your cat spayed or neutered they will gain some weight. It is good yours still gets its exercise, or he could really gain weight. I have a medium size cat that is about 8 years old. He eats a full tuna size can of canned food every morning, and has dry food available at all times. He doesn't pig out once he gets his canned food in for the day, will occasionally nibble on the dry stuff. To me when I pet him, he seems skinny~ But at night when and if he decides to come in and snuggle he will walk up my side, sometimes "make bread' for a bit then settle down for a few hours. At those times he does not seem skinny at all he is a heavy little bugger!

As many have suggested,, was your cat spayed/neutured? That always seems to make it easier for a cat to put on some extra pounds. Although, I did have a cat that stayed as slim as he was before being neutured. Have you tried putting the cat on one of the weight control foods? Has the vet seen him and does he seem concerned about the weight gain? The only other suggestion I can make is to play with him more,, the feathers on the string on the end of a 'fishing pole" are great for getting a cat more active.

I will second everybody here, this is mostly happening because you have recently spayed/neutered your cat. Otherwise, I don't really find any reason for which it might have worsened, because you're basically keeping it under "harsh diet". My cats have been always fit, even though I kept giving them a lot of food on a daily basis, and they were basically procrastinating rather than even moving a single paw... I do hope it's not something genetically-related, because that might worsen your cat's condition over time and potentially have some serious issues to deal with afterwards. I've recently seen a video that involved a cat with more than 30 Kg ( ~66 pounds!!!) that couldn't even move its head because the malevolent condition. Could you believe your eyes if you saw it?
