Pets breeding
Just wondering, had any of you been breeding your pets?

My fish bred regularly, but in a community tank it's hard for the fry to survive. So I do not have the overpopulation problem.
The only fry grew up to adulthood were two Dwarf Gourami, a few Platy, and several dozen Neon Rainbowfish, which I gave away quite a lot to friends.

My Yellow Shrimps breed a lot too. I got 13 of them, now I have 150+. Since they are no more than one inch long at full adult size, a 10 gallon tank handled them pretty well.

If I get dogs or cats in the future, I doubt I will ever try to breed them. Blame bw, his "overpopulation" posts would make me feel guilty if I try. Tongue

If I get birds, I might try to breed them. Since a while ago I always wanted to raise a just hatched bird chick. I heard they will be so attached to you because they'd think you are the parent. Tongue

RE: Pets breeding
I have bred mice in order to use a feeder mice for my python, Anthrax, before. Talk about overpopulation problem, Anthrax could only eat so many mice, but the mice continued to have litters of 8-12 baby mice. We had to separate out the males and females before too long.

Those nice inbreed too. How often and how much did you feed your python?

With the euthanizing of 3 to 4 million dogs and cats each year because of too many born, no I do not breed my pets.

Well, some people think that successful breeding is the most rewarding part of owning pets.

I would agree on the fish keeping. Although I would not randomly breed them without having plan what to do with the fry.

RE: Pets breeding
I have nothing against people, the Responsible breeders, that breed dogs & cats properly. You know, do the genetic testing to make sure they are not passing on problems common to the breeds. Prove the dogs to be up to breed standard. Be able to trace a pedigree for several generations. What I have a HUGE problem with is most people breeding Fluffy and Fido "just 'cause" or "oops" Most breeding should not take place and the proof is in our shelters getting euthanized every day.
