Small or Big Dogs?
As a pet do you have a preference between small or big dogs?  I love all dogs but I find that I like bigger dogs as pets.  I like the protection a bigger dog provides. I plan on moving back to the country so I like the idea of a dog that can't be picked up by an eagle when it's playing in the backyard.  So what about you?  Do you have a preference.

RE: Small or Big Dogs?
Our first dog is Jedi, a medium sized female that I couldn't carry for she's kinda heavy for me. That's why it is a problem whenever we would bring her along in the car. Our second dog is Epoy, a pekingese that is cuddly with a thick coat. Ever since we took home Epoy when he was 2 months old, he was already oriented in riding the car. In fact, we call him car addict for he would always get excited upon hearing of the word joyride.

With Epoy, it made me realize that a small dog is more convenient and easier to take care of because of the size and weight. As one neighbor said, small dogs eat small so it is cheaper to maintain. But with me, the cost of the food is not material, I really don't mind the cost as long as my dog is contented. At present, the oldest dog is another medium sized spitz atlhough a bit smaller than Jedi. Our pug Pipoy is also a small dog like his contemporary Barbie, a white pekingese who happens to be my favorite. So there, it is the small dog for me.

RE: Small or Big Dogs?
I love small dogs. I have a miniature dachshund and even thought it's not a toy type, she's still pretty small compared to other. She's very cute and doesn't take up much space. I live in a pretty small house and big dogs just won't do. Also, it's very easy to carry them around whenever they're feeling stubborn or just won't obey. It rarely happens but it does, unfortunately.

I'd love to have a big dog but I live in an apartment so all I've ever had were small dogs, which I also love, but they're not as fun to play with. If I were to get a big dog I'd probably go for Siberian Husky, I'm in love with them. I wish big dogs were easier to take care of. If they were I'd get one even though my house is not exactly good for them... I don't do it because I don't want a dog that ends up sad because he misses open spaces to run and play.

I have had both big and small dogs as pets.  I find that now that I am older, I prefer small dogs.  They tend to be easier to take care of.  Also, they are great lap dogs and they snuggle so well in the bed at night!  There is actually room for me too!

Ai agree with what Kristen07 posted, and I also like small dogs now that I am older. When I lived out in the country and we had bears and cougars in the woods around the house, it was good to have a large guard dog. We had Great Danes, and they were a perfect dog for watching out for predators and also discouraging any stranger that might come up our driveway when we were gone to town for the day.
Now, I live in town, just have a small back yard, and do not do a lot of walking like I used to do when i was younger and lived in the country. We have two small, older dogs, and they are perfect for me right now.
Tootsie is part Blue Heeler and she is an excellent watch dog, and no one comes anywhere close to the house without her knowing it.
Chipper is much older, partially blind and deaf, so Tootsie is also his "escort dog" when we let them out in the yard. Chipper feels much safer when he knows that Tootsie is nearby and watching out for things that he can no longer see.

I don't really care about the size of the dog. It's all about the connection you have when you first meet your future pet. Sometimes it's just magical and there is an instant connection with your dog.

Everyone has their reason for having dogs. In my local area they are treated like door bells and they bark when anyone come s near to the front yard. So of course they want something that looks formidable and barks loud enough for everyone the hear.

I for one look for the relationship. Sometimes it just feels right and I have to take him or her home.

I do agree to some about having a connection with your dog but I do think size matters when it comes to function and where you live.  I'm about to move out into the country so I don't just need a companion but a guard/work dog.  So a bigger dog is just more practical.  But I can understand that the older people get, a smaller dog would be more practical companion.  The only reason I could understand getting a small dog is for hunting, my uncle has a small dog that he loves that helps him with gophers and badgers.  But I don't hunt so I don't need a small dog for that reason.  A connection is very important but I don't think it's fair to adopt or buy a dog that is wrong for the job you expect it to do.

RE: Small or Big Dogs?
We currently have big and small dogs. We live in the city and having both sizes really made us think about considering the size when keeping pets. The big ones we have are American Pitbulls and man they can get really huge. As of now, we're thinking if we should still keep the big ones as they can take up a large amount of space. Like, right now, they occupy a whole floor in our town house and when they play around, imagine all of them running and swirling around, then you suddenly bump into them, which can get hurt as we're of small frames and get bruises sometimes, especially if their claws haven't trimmed yet. While the small ones we got are of mixed from Japanese Spitz and Mini Pincher. I think, personally, they're great to have. You can carry them wherever you go, have them on your lap without really worrying about their weight. I also like them as they're quirky and super playful, as I think they can carry their selves without the feeling of 'Oh Gosh, I'm heavy and I'm too lazy to even get up." Some times, I think our pits think this way and prefer to sleep more or I don't know, maybe they just have different personalities. But still I love both size. It's just that, it'll always come down to considering the space you can provide for their well-being which will eventually result to their happiness.

RE: Small or Big Dogs?
I have a preference of both small and big dogs due to positive experiences with both. Small dogs tend to be a bit playful and they are the ones that we currently keep in our compound. I have to say that they like nimbling alot on food due to their small volume compared to surface area. They make useful pets in times of depression when they are all over somebody by distracting your thoughts. Big dogs are very loyal and reflective. They are great with the kids and because they tend to be a bit docile. Unlike small dogs, kids are not likely to hurt them since they wouldn't view them as toys. Big dogs also confer a security dividend and can serve as sentries and are used by the police to apprehend criminals. If its possible, one should keep a combination of big and small dogs.

I love the small ones. Medium sized are also attractive. However, size doesn't matter, they should be obedient and trustworthy.

Size matters when you have a limited budget and space. Tongue

Larger dogs will eat a lot more food than smaller dogs.   They also need extra space at your home to just stretch lol.   Not everyone who loves dogs has a lot of extra cash.  Not everyone lives in a large house.  Some people live in small apartments.    So size matters to a certain degree to certain groups.   Not a problem at all if you have no budget issue and live in a large home.   Smile

This is one of the things we need to consider before we get a pet. It is not only about our personal preference, but we also need to look at if we have the means to support the pet's need and raise them properly.

Big Grin Of course, budget matters. I just forgot in the love of pets. Then, it is better to take a puppy and give him/her a good breed. Raise it as big as you want with your own effort. But, money would also matter here.   Gen068

Well I prefer small dogs because they are so cute, although I do have a golden retriever and I would never replace, I love spending time with him.
