No, I have just come home from Happy Hour. I actually have 2 cats that meow the word "hello" every night after my girls go to bed. They close their door and these two cats want in. So they will start meowing what sounds exactly like the word "hello". It is the strangest thing. And how odd that 2 of my 3 cats do this. I've owned several other cats, and none of those have done this.
My cat loves to talk with us. She didn't use to do it. For most of her life she made little to no noise. Even her meows were just mouth movement. After my divorce and move to a home with no other cats (the rest belonged to my ex) she suddenly "found her voice" and hasn't shut up since then. She seems to love being the only kitty around.
How coincidental! My oldest cat, although huge, didn't have a meow for the first few years of his life. He'd open his mouth and either nothing would come out or just the tiniest hint of a meow, more like a litten meow. Then after we moved to our new home 4 years ago, he stared with the "hello" meows. And not soft ones either; they are super loud. When I tell my friends this, they usually don't believe it. He only does it at night and shortly have the youngest cat starts it up. Maybe he learned it from her.
Oh, yes! In the morning whenever my fiancee or I go to the washroom, one of the boys goes into the washroom and does a short meow as in a "hey." When we get home, the same boy would do a meow as in a "Hi! Finally you're home."
Our other little guy doesn't do any meows unless he is really yearning for food!
The only time I ever hear either of my cats meow is when they want to be fed and as soon as I walk through the door after being gone. I suppose that could be taken as a "hello" although neither of them has a distinct "hello" meow the way your cat seems to!
Here is a youtube video of a cat saying hello that is the closest I've found to the way my cats say hello. Although, I think my cats can say it even clearer. I guess I will have to record them when they do this. Problem is, they only do it late at night when it's dark. It's too creepy to get up and record them then. I think I'd start to feel like I was in a horror movie. LOL
When I saw this thread I thought back to a time when I thought my mom said our cat said hello. But to make sure and since my mom is sitting right next to me...I asked her if any one of our four cats said hello. She said yes but that it sounds like they are saying the words Mom or Now as in they want food now. It was funny too since right when my mom said the word Now in our conversation our cat meowed Now again! So yes our cat says Hello as well as Mom and Now.
