When I was about 9-10, I had a wonderful cat named Suzie-Q. I loved her, and she was always beside me when I was outside. (mom didn't allow any animals inside)
One day I decided to teach her to lead on a leash. I made a little harness for her out of some clothesline rope, and tried to teach her to lead. She would flop down on her side and refuse to go. Eventually, she would get back up again, and then I just let her walk, and followed her around. After a few days of this routine, she was used to the harness, and I was able to start to direct where she went. It wasn't too long before she was fine on the leash and came along just about like a little dog would have done.
This is the only time i have ever attempted to teach a cat to walk on a leash, but i think if you had lots of time, patience, and a good natured cat; it could be done.
