Everyone has their reason for having dogs. In my local area they are treated like door bells and they bark when anyone come s near to the front yard. So of course they want something that looks formidable and barks loud enough for everyone the hear.
I for one look for the relationship. Sometimes it just feels right and I have to take him or her home.
I do agree to some about having a connection with your dog but I do think size matters when it comes to function and where you live. I'm about to move out into the country so I don't just need a companion but a guard/work dog. So a bigger dog is just more practical. But I can understand that the older people get, a smaller dog would be more practical companion. The only reason I could understand getting a small dog is for hunting, my uncle has a small dog that he loves that helps him with gophers and badgers. But I don't hunt so I don't need a small dog for that reason. A connection is very important but I don't think it's fair to adopt or buy a dog that is wrong for the job you expect it to do.
