How can I improve my bearded dragon's enclosure?

I will look into building my own. I had initially wanted to do something similar to a turtle platform, as in a flat surface attached with suction cups; local pet stores don't have quite what I had in mind and turtle platforms are designed to float. Shouldn't be too difficult to come up with my own, however

I hear mixed reports on this, but I've been toying with the idea of switching to sand substrate once Kaiah's an adult. I am not fond of the idea of manhandling a 40 gallon aquarium to dump sand out for cleaning, however; the sand looks nice but that just seems like a pain
