Personally I think this guy got off easy; my theory is everyone who mistreats an animal in any way should be mistreated in the same manner!

ILION, N.Y. — A central New York man faces animal cruelty charges after 19 reptiles were found in a hot vehicle and 13 of them died.

Police in Ilion, near Utica, say 24-year-old Brian Higgins Jr. of Jordanville was charged Sunday afternoon with 13 counts of torturing animals and failure to provide sustenance, a misdemeanor.

Police say the lizards, snakes and geckos were left in a vehicle for 26 hours without food, water or shelter.

This is a little extreme. Wink

I personally believe people who mistreat pets on purpose should be punished, but not "be mistreated in the same manner".

People who can't take care of animals in their procession should be fined, and never be allowed to have animals until they can prove they are able to do it differently.

For people who mistreat animals on purpose, they should be fined heavier and go to jail depend on the severe of the case.

@pugskjj

I think he got off easy too. Way too easy. I believe you should get what you give. Bottom line. I known people who believe it or not, have done far worse things to their pets than this clown and got less. My aunt was also murdered and the guy basically got a slap on the wrist. If punishments are handed out like the crimes were. People and animals would be a lot safer.

Wow I'm sorry to hear about your aunt! I just get sickened when I see someone mistreating anyone or anything. I have an Iguana that has only 2 good legs, 1 stump and a leg that is finally healing from metabolic bone disorder...he was mistreated in the extreme and I wish I knew the person who did it...they wouldn't want someone to mistreat them to the point of physical harm so why do this to a defenseless pet that you CHOSE to have in your home

Ha! You know how many times this has happened in our city this summer? There have been a dozen news stories about pets being stuck in cars in 40-plus (Celsius) degree weather. Of course, according to police statistics, there were a total of 120 reports in the month of June. It makes me sick and just shows how stupid some people are. No respect for human or animal life

Those are really sad and horrifying stories. One of the scariest things for me is, if someone actually found a pet trapped in a car and broke in to help him, he would probably get a worse punishment than that pet guardian. I don't think that giving him a taste of his own medicine would be too cruel, though I wouldn't leave him to die. The punishments for mistreating animals (and sometimes even humans) are really dangerously low and easily avoidable.

I hate to think of animals being mistreated this way. No animal should ever be left in a vehicle in hot weather, even for a short time. I know a lady who will wait by a car with a dog inside until the owner returns. Then she gives the owner a good talking to about the dangers of leaving a dog in the car for any amount of time. She does not mind what people think of her, she is more concerned about animals suffering, or dying from the heat. She says she will continue to do this whenever she sees a dog left in a car, even for a short time, in hot weather.

That guy should be punished severely for animal cruelty, because I am sure he would do it again if he got the chance and maybe one day he will forget his kid in an overheated car.

As for the subject of the topic: when you take your dog for walk remember it's not wearing shoes!!! This is a real problem, I have seen some very severe injuries because of the hot cement!

Fortunately I don't have to take my pets for a walk because they have all the space they need in my yard and they can run and play in the grass.

This is such a huge problem across the globe; not in just in the USA. I hear about pets getting too much heat while being left in a car and with barely a cracked window. It should be left down about 1-2 inches and not on just one window. All windows should be down that much. This will allow for air flow across the whole vehicle and should be parked in the shade. If you have a pet that is caged or boxed, place them in the back seat floor and put a towel over it. The animal will think it's nighttime and go to sleep, which will allow their bodies to cool off.

My little Chipper just loves to go for rides on the car ! He likes to sit on my lap and look out like he was driving. He is only 6 lbs, so it is easy for him to do this and I can still see to drive.
I do not take him along when the weather gets extreme though, either too hot, or too cold. People always talk about not leaving your pet in a hot car, but it is not good to leave your pet in a cold me to freeze either. (Unless, of course, you have a Malamute, or one of the breeds that love the cold weather).
I actually never take Chipper along if I am going to leave the car, as in going to the store. It if I am going looking for yard sales, where I can see him in the car, then I take him as long as the weather is suitable.
