I was a brand new dog owner 2 years ago. He was a small dog with a very thin and wiry hair like fur.
For the most part, I agree that dogs do not need clothes and its just mean to dress them since they do have their own year round fur coat. However, in the case of my little dog and the thinness of his coat, I did put a thin hoodie on him in the fall and a fleece suit on him during the winter. I only did it because literally 10 seconds out the door, he would start shivering uncontrollably and would want to head back in most of the time without even having done his business.
Adding at least a thin layer of warmth for him was a good thing because it enabled him to last longer outside and to make it comfortable enough for him to play and burn doggie energy! :-)
