Is pet food safe for humans?

I have read it somewhere that a man mistaken a canned cat food for human food. He had been buying and eating it very frequently for years, until one day some family friends noticed it when he was preparing it for them.

Is cat food and other pet food safe for human consumption? Not that I will try them though.
