Reliable place to purchase a tarantula?

I live in the U.S, Illinois. I'm looking for a nice place to purchase a tarantula. Are pet store tarantulas any more or less "friendly" than other places to buy them? Do their personalities differ based on how they are handled/by who?

I ask because I want to expand my pet collection. I have never been a fan of pet stores, as I know birds sold in pet stores often suffer many health and personality disorders. Birds require a lot of personal care and when they are shoved in a glass box with at least 20 other birds, their health declines.

Are tarantulas the same story? Do they require things that a pet store cannot provide? Do they need to be handled from the time they were a baby in order to be suitable pets?
