American Indian Dog, an ancient breed.
Here is another interesting dog that very few people have ever heard about.
Even though it is not a wild dog, it is special because it is one of the earliest civilized dogs. This special dog is the American Indian Dog, and there are still a few of them being kept from Alaska to South America, by the tribes of Native Americans in the various areas.
There are a few breeders that are now also raising the Indian Dog, trying to keep the breed from going extinct. These are the kind of dogs that were kept by our native people as far back as they have the records and pictures of both the Indians and their dogs .
This webpage has more of the interesting history of these dogs, as well as early pictures of the dogs at Indian camps; and also some pictures of the dogs as they are today.

RE: American Indian Dog, an ancient breed.
It's so interesting to see dogs that have been around for such a long time. It makes you wonder about what other dogs were there in the past that did, unfortunately, go extinct. I had no idea that this breed even existed and it's great to learn something new! They are definitely sweet and cute looking from the picture on the site you gave the link to! I hope that the breeders are keeping this dog from being extinct. It would just be a shame to lose a breed because of either science (mix-breeding) and unawareness.

RE: American Indian Dog, an ancient breed.
I think it is great that they are preserving this ancient breed as well. One of the veery oldest domestic dogs was the beautiful Afghan Hound. They , like the Indian Dog, used to stay around the camps of the native Afghans, and slowly became domesticated. I am sure that those original dogs were much different from the gorgeous show dogs that we see as an Afghan Hound now.
I friend of my daughter's was in the military and she brought home a dog from Afghanistan, and even though it didn't have the long coat, or the face of an Afghan Hound, I noticed that it did have the tail that curled just at the end like their do; so I think somewhere in the background, it was probably related.
