after 6 years. I truly missed my dog I lost 6 years ago, and just wasn't ready to have another until now. The dilemma I am finding, is that the asking price for so many dogs is high. I support care for homeless dogs, by way of donations, and understand what goes into preparing a puppy, or older dog for a new home. Shots, etc. It's a lot of work.
We have a place that I go at times, but not often. It's too hard to see the prices that I cannot afford. I can afford to feed, regular grooming (if they need clipping etc.) and veterinary care. But I am low-income. I have what it takes to love a dog though, and give them a good home. They would be outdoors with me walking, camping up our river in this area, hiking trails, and I am feed well, including foods with vitamins such as Nutro, or Iams I found to be good.
I know I am opening myself up here to folks who will think if I can't 2-300 for a dog, I have no business owning one. But for those of you that know you can provide a good home, just not the high expense of a pup, or adult dog.
Any feedback/suggestions welcome. I also am hesitant to buy from places like Craigslist. Although I have wanted to rescue a baby that is being given away free. Who knows where they might end up, chained in a backyard.
I was a little unclear on your post. Are you worried about the cost of buying a dog or the cost of maintaining them? If it's buying a dog, why not ask around family and friends if anyone has a litter of puppies they are giving away (unless you want an older dog). There are also animal shelters that you can try. There will be a fee (usually around $50). Another place you can try is the classified ads of your local newspaper. Many times there are people giving away dogs.
I always think of elderly folks who become ill or simple can handle the daily routine of taking care of a dog anymore. I don't know if there is a network for this type of thing.
You could also try your local veterinary clinic. I know when I take my dog in for her appointments, the bulletin board is filled with signs from people giving away free dogs and cats. This is usually the first place in the community that people post these types of things because they know other animal lovers will be there.
I hope I haven't misunderstood your dilemma. Please let me know if I have.
