Dogs Can Get Sick for Ingesting Marijuana
Quote:But according to a new study, one unintended side effect of legalized pot is a spike in the number of pets who get sick after accidentally ingesting the drug.
Source

This study was conducted in Colorado where smoking pot has been legal for 12 years. So if you do smoke pot and have a pet (a dog or cat in particular), make sure to keep it out of their reach.

What are the effects on dogs?

They become lethargic, end up staggering, and vomit. They also become sensitive to sound and light. Their motor skills are also affected.

It makes a lot of sense. I knew someone who had a dog and he would have all of his stupid drugs on the coffee table and his dog would accidentally digest it. She became immediately ill and suffered from the side effects for a couple of days.

Yes, you have to be very careful what you leave around your home when you have dog. They don't understand that some things shouldn't be consumed. My family all on different medications, when we accidentally drop one we look for it in order to find it because we don't want either of our dogs to find it instead and eat it. That can be dangerous. But plants can be just as dangerous, because dogs really don't understand that some of these should be off limits such as Marijuana. That's why people with pets such as dogs are told to be careful with certain flowers and holiday plants because these can be poisonous.

People can get sick from ingesting it so I can see why dogs would. It probably gives off a different reaction. When I lived in California, a lot of people grew marijuana plants in their yards legally since they had cards. A neighbor's dog ran away from home and was found sick in the neighbors yard from eating it. He was fine but he did need a lot of work up and medication from the vet. It's probably more common for animals to get sick from it in CA since people just openly grow it.

Smoking pot hasn't been legal for 12 years in Colorado...it just became legal for recreational use.
But yeah, no matter what the drug, don't leave it in the reach of dogs, because it can get them sick or kill them. Put it up away somewhere just like you would for small children.

Agreed. Keep marijuana out of reach of dogs. And out of reach of children, too. Actually extend that to include all kinds of medicine and other things which can be swallowed inadvertently. We must remember that our dogs, intelligent as they may look, have the mental capacity of very young children. So they are likely to try everything once. And that one time may very well be their last. Permanently.

Yes, as I said as dog owners we need to be very careful what we have around our dogs. From prescription drugs, insecticides and of course plants like Marijuana. I find it interesting how Marijuana is now starting to become a legal substance in the United States. How do I personally feel about this, well I don't see this plant being any worse then some prescription pain killers that are out there on the market, regardless of what some may say about it, so why not let it be legal like these drugs are. One thing is certain though, such as with our prescription medications dog owners and other pet owners need to be careful with Marijuana as well.

Oh. My bad. I wanted to clarify that up. Medical Marijuana has been legalized for 12 years now.

May I know how long has smoking pot for recreational use been legalized?

Do you think vets would eventually consider using it to help dogs experiencing chronic pain?

I can't believe that owners are allowing this powerful drug to be in the reach of their poor pets. It is terribly to the point where they are running their own health and the pets end up suffering by mistake as well. I hope that they really pet proof the house so that the pets can never get in reach with their own mistakes.
The sadness I feel for the pets can't even be explained in a post.
