Make Your Own Dog Bones
A fellow dog lover shared her recipe for home made dog bones with me. She has started making her own after all the reports about some feed and dog bones, and chew bones, being danagerous for pets to consume.
The recipe is organic and made from all natural ingredients.
1 cup of rolled oats
1/3 cup butter
3/4 cup cornmeal
mixed vegetables likr peas & carrots or 1/2 cup broth
1 egg
2-4 cups flour
1-1/2 cups milk
Mix it all together adding the flour a little at a time. Knead until it is not sticky. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut out the bones. Bake on cookie sheet at 325 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 3 dozen large bones or 6 dozen small bones. They keep for 2-3 weeks.

I made a batch to try the recipe and they turned out well and another
friend's german shepard loved them. So it's your turn to do something special for your dog.

RE: Make Your Own Dog Bones
I made some a long time ago from left over soup. It had the vegetables, the broth and the meat already in there. They absolutely loved them.

I would do more of that now but i never have any left over soup with all 5 of us in the house.

I should try it again, but I haven't thought about it in a long time. And we don't give our dogs treats so we don't think about it much. But I am sure they would love it.

jowjo I think a broth with meat is a good idea. My dog does not like these kinds of treats as we have had her sample at least a dozen store bought ones. Perhps the ones she has tried don't have any meat flavor since when I smell them they smell more sweet rather than meaty. I'll be trying this recipe, perhaps she'll like a home made version rather than those from a pet store.

I think the home made version will be far less expensive than buying ready made dog treats, and probably better for the dog. I think it is a great idea to make suitable treats out of leftovers or parts of an animal or plant that humans reject but would be safe and tasty for the dog to eat.

Thanks for the recipe! I ought to try that (for the dog, of course Wink). I have never heard of making homemade dog bones exactly, but I have seen my dad make homemade dogfood a few times. It worked really well for our dogs' coats and made them really shiny. I think our dogs will like the homemade bones as much as they like the dog food.

Thanks for posting, I'll have to try this. We've made homemade treats for my dog before and she went nuts over them. If you haven't tried making your own, you really should.

Unfortunately one of my dogs is very allergic to corn products so I can't try this recipe, unless I can find a cornmeal alternative - but this sounds a lot better than my standard homemade treats which are hardly more than peanut butter and flour. I think I will make them anyway and give them away. My neighbor's dog, Batman, is completely unimpressed with any of the three treat recipes I've tried (beef and peanut butter) so I'm on a mission to find a recipe he won't reject! Thank you so much for the recipe!

This is a really good idea, I have never thought about making my own dog bones before, I suppose this is a really good thing because you can be sure of what is going into it and therefore how healthy it is for your dog to consume. Anything that contributes to my dog being in the best health possible is a valuable thing to look at. Thanks for the recipe I think I will try these, and see how my dog likes them!
